Uphill Battle: Inter had only won one of the four meetings between the two sides in European competition
Liverpool left it late to take the lead over the Italian champions, with the usual suspects Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah scoring from their team's only on-target shots.
Sadio Mane nearly gave Liverpool an early lead when his head met Andy Robertson's cross via a free-kick, but he could only guide his header just over the bar.
A couple of minutes later, Hakan Calhanoglu went close to scoring too. He struck the crossbar with a meteoric close-range shot that certainly looked to have beat Liverpool's Alisson.

A few minutes after the restart, Perisic made yet another dangerous run down the left and hooked a cross that was just about too high for Lautaro Martinez to nod into an empty net.
There was finally a break-through when Firmino steered a bullet-like header past a crowded penalty area into the far corner from Robertson's corner delivery.
Salah then wrapped up the win when Inter couldn't clear away Liverpool's free-kick. The wobbling ball eventually found its way to the Egyptian winger, who awkwardly slotted it past a helpless Samir Handanovic.
