Match report by William Okafor-Oregan
Man United equalled the largest-ever win margin in Premier League history, as they fired nine past the Saints.
Barely three minutes had been played before Southampton were reduced to 10 men, with teenager Alexandre Jankewitz getting a straight red card on his full league debut.
Man United's full backs combined for the opening goal as Luke Shaw crossed in a delightful ball to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who finished neatly. Marcus Rashford then doubled the lead with a composed finish from Mason Greenwood's cut-back.
The away side conceded two more goals in the remainder of the first half with Jan Bednarek putting Rashford's cross into his own net. Then minutes later Edinson Cavani expertly headed home United's fourth.
It appeared that United had let their foot off the gas in the second half, until Anthony Martial's right-footed finish sparked a whirlwind final 20 minutes. Moments later Scott McTominay drilled a long-range strike into the flat-footed Saints' net.
It went from bad to worse for Bednarek too, as he was sent off late in the game for a foul on Martial. The penalty he gave away in the process, was confidently dispatched by Bruno Fernandes.
United added two more goals in the dying minutes through Martial and Dan James, who both scored close range efforts.
It was a remarkable victory for Man United, particularly after picking up just one win in the previous four league games. As for their opponents, this defeat means that Southampton have now recorded a 9-0 defeat in consecutive league campaigns.
