Sergio Aguero got an early injury in the match and it seemed like a problem with his knee ligament after being clattered over in a challenge by two players simultaneously. But when the 24th minute of the game came along, Man City were awarded a debatable penalty when Yaya Toure's through pass to Milner put Jagileka in a position to have to tackle and when Milner went down, the referee pointed to the spot. It was then Toure, who stepped up in place of Aguero, to tuck the penalty in the bottom corner but Tim Howard was close to saving it.

It was early in the second half when Milner's squared a pass to substitute, Pozo, who shot a fierce first-time strike and was brilliantly saved by Howard's legs from 8 yards out. Frank Lampard was introduced into the game and in a matter of seconds nearly created a second for Man city when a lobbed through-ball to Dzeko was then headed across the center of the penalty area where Milner hit a volley wide of the goal. Late in the game, Eto'o had a great chip pass to Lukaku, who hit a powerful shot towards goal but was superbly tipped away by Joe Hart. Ross Barkley was later booked for simulation after a light shove by Lampard. But Everton weren't good enough on the day to stop Man city winning 1-0.
